Trump orders Pentagon to begin testing nuclear weapons 'immediately' HI Welcome back. Live images from the Hans and South Korea. President Trump is inside for his meeting with Xi Jinping. The President of China will be joining in just a few minutes.

About 20 minutes before the President of China was due to land in South Korea, President Trump announced a major change in policy. The United States has more nuclear weapons than any other country.

This was completed during my first term in office, including a complete update and modernization of the current arsenal. I hated to do it, but I had no choice.

China is in the second round of Russia, but we will be in the next 5 years because of the other

countries' testing programs. I have directed the War Department to begin testing our

nuclear weapons on an equal footing. This process will begin immediately. Thank you for

your attention to this matter. President Donald J. Trump, with you now, Congressman Adam

Smith of Washington. DemocratRanking Member of the House Armed Services Committee. Welcome. We're definitely going to see good years in this here. But in this real time, definitely, your idea.

Well, I don't know what that means. Well, I mean,

Are we going to end up with nuclear weapons in the Nevada desert? Again?

I don't think so. I don't know if he's going to test them, but making sure that we have a strong nuclear deterrent is absolutely a critical part of our defense strategy.

And I think it's really important that we start talking to China and Russia about how to deal with this. China and Russia have refused to talk to the United States.

So we're ready to get their attention to start a dialogue. I almost like you praising Donald Trump. I mean, I talk about facts.

I don't think that the Int'l is competing with China. India is fine, no. Don't put words in my mouth. I don't think it's the end of the world that he's pointing to Tuchina now,

Okay, you've got nuclear weapons. So are we past the point of talking about this?

Part of it is about starting a dialogue. China has been expanding its nuclear arsenal extensively during the Cold War. We had very close talks with the Soviet Union to make sure

that we didn't stumble into a nuclear conflict. These discussions need to start. And I hope Trump will push those people forward.

And that's your money. The US was the first on the show and said

that it didn't think it wanted to be a hegemon. It didn't want to be dominant. Insert force.

World, you disagree? No, I agree with that, I totally agree with that, I just had my first congressional trip to China that I did that a month ago. First in 6 years.

Look, both China and the United States need to get past this ideology that is going to defeat each other. We are not going anywhere. They are not going anywhere.

We need to figure out how to live together in a multipolar world, how to tolerate each other. I don't think China is bent on global domination. I think about the terms

of how they have married their neighbors in particular. And in terms of what they have said about THESTOP

How do you convince China to do that?

They will not be allowed to run away from the Philippine Islands anymore. They will not be allowed to bully.

The rest of the world. Do you deliver that message? That's what I did. I tried my best to get that message across to a large number of closed opposition parties. And I think so.

It's great that Trump is there. ITHINK Secretary Rubio should go there. You start by having him.

A dialogue so that we're noticing each other from afar. Look, China is invested in getting a reasonable global order. And so are we. We have to find a way.

To live together. And you think Xi Jingpingis wants to live together in a way that doesn't involve China

Line and I don't know if we're going to get there yet. Exactly. But just wanting to live together as a starting point, look, they don't trust us. We don't trust them,

But we need to start having conversations about where a better place can be and meeting with power is a good idea. Yeah, that's right. I do.

You're not sure that's all there is to it. All Trump said was that we were going to test nuclear weapons and it was much more important that they were the ones that were negotiating with them.

You're back live now. I'm Austin Westfall. We have some breaking news that we want to hit really fast because we're looking at a new post from President Trump.

This just came out a few moments ago. He says the United States has more nuclear weapons than any other country. This was completed including a complete update and renovation of the existing

weapons during my first term in office. Because of the sheer destructive power. I hated to do it but I had no choice. Russia is second with China. Third but will be within 5 years. Because of the second, he says.

Countries testing programs. The President says he's directing the War Department to begin testing our nuclear weapons on an equal footing. That process will begin immediately. He says,

Thank you for your attention to this matter. Um, do we have anyone standing by, how are you? Um, who has done, many incidents, I know you personally.

Have been a part of many incidents. Especially in Southern California, speaking of nuclear weapons

How do you feel when you see this news?

What is the significance of the United States testing nuclear weapons again? Well, Austin, this is a huge change in American policy. We haven't tested a nuclear weapon in the United States since 1992.

Oh, you remember in the early 60s. All above ground testing around the world was stopped because those big nuclear explosions, you know, encapsulated and

And video. And film, I should say we watch films and certainly news reels and things. Well, it was difficult. I was pushing a ton of radioactive material into the atmosphere. And causing major health effects.

Pakistan and Taliban government talks fail in Istanbul, Pak-Afghan war begins

So, oh, my international agreement that was stopped but still underground testing. Now all the other major nations. Russia stopped doing it,

The United States doesn't do it. However, North Korea has been doing this and North Korea is making threats. Their nuclear testing, which is also underground. Oh, that would be a big change.

The question that immediately comes to mind is where they're planning to do this? All the previous tests were done in Nevada. Oh, that's an area. It's not far from Las Vegas.

Oh, but this area has basically been closed down because of being an active nuclear testing area. Obviously for 3 decades, and I don't know if we want to do nuclear testing there because there are issues

that we're rediscovering with the water table and other environmental impacts. So, it's an interesting policy but it doesn't just bring up the question of why.

And what would that mean, but how and what would happen, what would be the impact of these tests? We'll hear more about that. The President
